Lane Wins ARTBA’s 2012 “TransOvation” Award

July 17, 2012

Lane is one of three recipients of the American Road & Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) “TransOvation” award for 2012. The award program recognizes and honors innovative transportation infrastructure-related techniques that quantitatively improve transportation safety while saving time and money.

Lane’s winning concept is the Temporary Median Access Bridge and Ramps on the I-85 Widening design-build project in Cabarrus County, NC. Most of the new roadway width is being constructed in the existing 70-foot median, which created a difficult access challenge and safety concerns. Lane staff devised the solution of a temporary bridge and ramps to provide safe, unimpeded access to the I-85 median.

Lane Sweeps HCCA Safety Awards in Virginia

May 4, 2012

Lane was honored with five awards from the Heavy Construction Contractors Association (HCCA) at its annual safety dinner held this spring in Manassas, VA. “Lane/Virginia Paving has just about run away with all the safety awards that we give out,” says Les Eszenyi, Executive Director of the HCCA, adding that he couldn’t recall any other company receiving as many safety awards as Lane did this year.

The awards were presented on March 18:

  • Virginia Paving Company (VPC) was honored for Outstanding Safe Work Practices in paving operations with over one million safe work hours for 2011.
  • HCCA presented two awards in a new category—Safety Innovation—and both went to Lane employees. Chris Phipps, Shop Foreman at VPC-Alexandria, won for the portable, lighted flagged station he designed. Justin Wells, Plant Foreman at VPC-Stafford, was honored for his contributions on a safe dump truck bed access rack located at the Garrisonville hot mix asphalt plant location.
  • Mark Jones, a Truck Driver at VPC-Norfolk, received the Humanitarian Award for his commendable efforts when he offered assistance to a motorist in distress. Jones stopped to offer help when he observed a vehicle fire on the shoulder of I-64 while en route to a job site.
  • J.R. Glascock, Mid-Atlantic Regional Safety Manager, received the Robert E. Woodward Memorial Safety Professional of the Year Award, HCCA’s highest honor for a safety professional.
