Heavy Civil Construction Services

Lane has the expertise backed by a modern fleet of more than 3,500 pieces of heavy construction equipment to complete the most challenging types of heavy civil construction. Success on every Lane project is determined largely by the rapid organization and mobilization of resources. For more information please download a PDF of our Heavy Civil Capabilities.

 Heavy Civil Capabilities

One of the US largest Heavy Civil Contractors

Lane is one of the United States largest and most experienced heavy civil contractors. For more than a century, Lane has been a leader in the construction of diversified heavy civil construction.  A wide range of heavy civil projects include flood walls, navigational locks, concrete and earth fill dams, landfill reclamation, site development for large automotive industrial and power projects, tunnels, hydroelectric projects, sewer and water retention basins, foundations for turbine generators, resource recovery plants, underground industrial waste lines, cleanup of low level waste materials, levee construction and dam foundation preparation.

One of Lane's largest Heavy Civil Projects was the $104 million subcontract to Turner Construction for the Automated People Mover System at Dulles International Airport in Virginia.

Dulles Metrorail Utility Relocation

This work is part of the first phase of construction for the extension of the Metro system toward Dulles International Airport. Lane’s project team worked closely with the prime contractor, Dulles Transit Partners (Bechtel & Washington Group) and local property owners on the project.

Dozens of unmarked utilities and gasoline-contaminated soil complicated the work. Lane crews worked day and night shifts to meet tight schedule requirements and to coordinate our work with the operations of multiple adjacent contractors.

Dulles International Airport Automated People Mover Main Station

AeroTrain replaceed most of the current mobile lounges that transported passengers between the airport’s main terminal and concourses. Construction of its main station, adjacent to the airport’s main terminal, required a vertical cut 50 feet below ground at the base of the terminal and the air traffic control tower. Both structures were underpinned with an extensive micropile and shoring system.

The support of excavation system included drilled piles, grouted and post-tensioned tiebacks, grouted rockbolts, splitsets and shotcrete. Work included removal of 300,000 cubic yards of rock excavation, with some blasted.
