I-70 Reconstruction, PA

Lane won a contract in Pennsylvania’s Washington County to rebuild and widen parts of Interstate 70, a $118 million project.

Overview

The highway project included widening a western section of I-70 from two to three lanes in each direction. It also includes rebuilding a four-lane stretch along the eastern section of I-70.

BENEFITS/POSITIVE ASPECTS TO COMMUNITY

In addition to the widening and rebuilding improvements, the project’s positive features include ease of travel and safety improvements that benefit drivers.

Upgrades include:

  • new interchange signing including overhead sign structures (monopipe);
  • upgrade of existing highway lighting;
  • and ITS relocation.

Other improvements included drainage, guiderail, pavement markings, and storm water mitigation, including detention basin construction; stream relocation; and stream mitigation.

Technical Highlights

The western section of the project from SR 136 Beau Street to I-79 South Junction generally widened a stretch of I-70 from two lanes to three lanes in each direction. The eastern portion of the project from I-79 South Junction to SR 0519 interchange reconstructed the four-lane section of I-70.

The project included lengthening the ramp acceleration and deceleration lanes and structure-related work as follows: Replacement of the bridge carrying Eastbound I-70 over CSX; construction of two sound wall barriers along Westbound I-70; construction of a retaining wall; and various culvert extensions.
