Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Owner: Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel Authority
Location: Virginia Beach, VA
Project Cost: $2 million

Project Type: Highways and Bridges  |  Procurement Type: Bid-Build
State: Virginia |  Status: Completed

The 21-mile-long Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel (CBBT), spanning the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay, is the only way from Virginia Beach to the eastern shore of Virginia and Maryland without going hundreds of miles around the Chesapeake Bay. Virginia Paving Company, a division of Lane, paved the entire length of the tunnel.

The project involved milling, cleaning, joint repairs, and paving, all during the same shift. The tight restrictions of the tunnel presented unique construction challenges for Virginia Paving Company. Construction took place while maintaining traffic operations on 12-foot-wide lanes, and would be halted under any adverse weather condition, including fog. Height restrictions on the tunnel presented additional challenges to transport materials. Virginia Paving Company completed the project on time and on budget.
