Project Type: Power and Energy; Rail, Metro & Mass Transit; Heavy Civil  |  Procurement Type: Bid-Build
State: Pennsylvania  |  Status: Completed

Due to heightened natural gas processing activity at new facilities throughout western Pennsylvania stemming from the Marcellus Gas boom, efficient means of product transport are ever increasingly in demand. Lane was selected to construct this project which included construction of a 5.1-mile rail siding, a rail yard and an adjacent recreational trail.

The major items on the project included excavation, various soldier pile walls, reinforced soil slope walls, concrete block walls. The storm drainage system, erosion and sediment control, relocation of local roads including at grade crossings was also included. Lane also coordinated and managed various subcontractors for incidental items such as fencing and signing.

Lane successfully excavated and moved more than 500,000 CY of material in the winter under adverse weather conditions, which allowed the owner to install the track and complete the project on schedule, enabling the owner to begin product shipments in July.

The rail siding and yard enables transportation of materials (liquid natural gas and other by-products) via railroad tankers, eliminating the need for road trucking.

For the tie-in at the active rail line, Lane coordinated regularly with the local rail agency.
