CHARLOTTE, NC – The Lane Construction Corporation, a subsidiary of the Webuild Group, announced the successful completion of its work on the Kansas City Levees Flood Risk Management Project, a transformative infrastructure initiative designed to significantly reduce flood risk for residents, businesses, and critical transportation networks across the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Delivered within the contractual completion period and recognized by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for its exceptional execution and delivery in near record time, the project represents one of the most significant flood risk reduction investments in the region’s history.

Completed in partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and local stakeholders, the project improves the reliability and resiliency of the region’s flood protection system along the Kansas and Missouri Rivers. The work helps protect more than 27,000 residents, 2,700 businesses and structures, and nearly $10 billion in property and infrastructure from potential flood damage.

“Completion of this project represents an important milestone for Kansas City and the communities that rely on this vital flood protection system,” said Daniele Nebbia, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of The Lane Construction Corporation. “Our team successfully delivered this complex flood risk management project within the contractual completion period while maintaining close coordination with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and numerous stakeholders. Recognition for the speed and quality of execution reflects the dedication of everyone involved in delivering critical infrastructure that will strengthen community resilience, protect vital assets, and support economic growth throughout the region.”

The project involved raising, replacing, and modifying more than 16 miles of levees and floodwalls throughout Kansas City’s industrial and commercial districts, helping reduce the risk of levee breaches and overtopping during major flood events. The improved system is expected to substantially decrease flood risk while enhancing protection for critical transportation, rail, utility, manufacturing, warehousing, and distribution assets that are essential to both the regional and national economy.

Project highlights include:

  • More than 1 million cubic yards of earthwork
  • 25,000 feet of new concrete floodwall construction
  • Installation of 120 new relief wells
  • Replacement of 12 railroad closure structures
  • Improvements to nearly 40 drainage structures
  • Modifications to more than 175 existing utilities

Located within the Argentine, Armourdale, and Central Industrial District levee units in Kansas and Missouri, the project modernizes aging infrastructure and enhances the region’s ability to withstand future flood events. The improvements support one of the nation’s largest Class I rail networks while helping preserve thousands of jobs and critical economic assets throughout the corridor.

Construction began in July 2021 and required extensive coordination among federal, state, local, railroad, and utility stakeholders. The project’s successful delivery demonstrates the strength of collaboration among all project partners and Lane’s commitment to operational excellence, safety, quality, and schedule performance.

By reducing flood risk, strengthening aging infrastructure, and enhancing the resiliency of the region’s flood protection system, the project will help safeguard communities, support economic development, and protect critical assets for decades to come.

The project reflects Lane’s continued commitment to delivering complex civil infrastructure that improves safety, resiliency, and quality of life in the communities it serves.
