CHARLOTTE, NC – The Lane Construction Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Webuild Group, in a joint-venture partnership with Schiavone Construction Co. LLC, now SPC Construction Co. LLC, recently celebrated the official ribbon cutting of the new Bruckner Expressway Over Westchester Creek (Unionport Bridge) in the Bronx. The event marked the completion and full opening of a vital infrastructure project that replaces the original 1950s-era bridge—enhancing safety, mobility, and connectivity for tens of thousands of daily commuters.

The $232 million Unionport Bridge Replacement Project replaces the aging bascule bridge with a modern double-leaf bascule structure designed for a 75-year service life. The bridge connects the Cross Bronx Expressway, Bruckner Expressway, and Hutchinson River Parkway, serving as a critical link between borough neighborhoods and key regional corridors.

Key Features and Improvements

  • Two side-by-side, single-leaf bascule spans, each supporting three lanes of traffic.
  • Dedicated pedestrian walkway and protected bike lane, supporting New York City’s Vision Zero and sustainable mobility goals.
  • Advanced mechanical and electrical systems for efficient bridge lifts and marine navigation.
  • Phased construction that kept traffic and maritime operations open throughout the project.
  • Enhanced lighting, signage, and safety systems for improved user experience and visibility.

Lane and its partner for this project, Schiavone Construction, led the replacement effort from groundbreaking to completion, coordinating complex marine, structural, and traffic management operations. The company’s innovative approach ensured the bridge remained operational during construction and met NYCDOT’s goals for safety, durability, and community impact.
